September 2019, 24/7<br class=""></b><br class="">Esther Eppstein, message salon<br class="">Die Diele, Sihlhallenstrasse 4, 8004 Zürich</font><div class=""><font face="Verdana" class=""><a href="https://messagesalon.ch/" class="">https://messagesalon.ch/</a></font></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><font face="Verdana" class=""><br class="">Der südafrikanische Künstler Ed Young residiert auf Einladung von Madame l' Ambassadeur Esther Eppstein zurzeit in Zürich und präsentiert im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe "Die message salon Diele" eine Ausstellung in den Schaufenstern von „Die Diele" an der Sihlhallenstrasse im Kreis 4.<br class=""><br class="">Der Künstler ist mit sozialkritischen Interventionen in Galerien und Kunstinstitutionen, sowie zwischenzeitlich als Co-Betreiber des experimentellen Projektraums Youngblackman in seiner Heimatstadt Cape Town bekannt geworden. Mit Zürich und ihrer Kunstszene ist Ed Young durch diverse Artist Residencies verbunden, 2013 bearbeitete er das Veli&Amos Billboard auf der Terrasse der Perla-Mode, letzten Sommer war der Künstler Gast des Index Freiraumstipendiums in Zürich.<br class=""><br class="">Ed Young spielt mit der Rolle des Künstlers als der Narr, Entertainer und Mahner, er provoziert mit Werken und Interventionen, welche der südafrikanischen Gesellschaft und dem westlich orientierten Kunstbetrieb, aber auch dem Selbstverständnis der Kunstszene mit subversivem Witz und lustvoll inkorrekt den kritischen Spiegel vorsetzen.<br class=""><br class="">Ed Youngs Textarbeiten sind verstörend und unbequem.<br class="">Sind es provokante Werbeslogans, getwitterte Hassbotschaften oder politische Propaganda? Die Texte, in immer derselben Typografie gestaltet, geben keine Emotionen preis, wirken optisch geradezu harmlos, doch die Aussagen sind in ihrer Wirkung brutal, boshaft-vulgär und düster.<br class=""><br class="">Der Titel der Ausstellung "It's Fun Without You" ("Es macht Spass ohne dich") ist vorerst lustig und "Fun", was in der modernen Welt zu einer Art Währung geworden ist. Die Aussage spielt mit den zynischen Versprechen der Werbung, welche die Konsumgesellschaft mit immer neuen Verführungen am Leben erhalten, aber auch mit der Sucht nach endlosem Vergnügen und der Sehnsucht nach Aufmerksamkeit und Anerkennung im Zeitalter von Socialmedia.<br class=""><br class="">Zur Eröffnung der Intervention in den zwei Schaufenstern an der Sihlhallenstrasse erscheint die Publikation "The #$@&%*!", message salon embassy Zine Nr. 18.<br class=""><br class="">"The #$@&%*!" ist ein Pamphlet, ein kruder Text wie aus einer Twittermaschinenpistole geschossen, eine atemlose Aneinanderreihung von verstörenden Aussagen und Provokationen. Wer spricht in diesem Text? Sind es reale Fragmente aus Kommentarspalten auf Newsportalen oder von Donald Trumps Twitter Konto, aus Emmanuel Macrons Reden oder von einer Antifa-Website? Oder vielleicht doch die Ausgeburt eines entfesselten Algorithmus, gefüttert mit den täglichen Obszönitäten aus dem Internet?<br class=""><br class="">Die Haltung des Künstlers zum Inhalt des Textes ist nicht mehr erkennbar, die moralische Absolution sucht man vergebens. Ed Young is connected to Zurich and its art scene through various artist residencies. In 2013 he worked on the Veli&Amos billboard on the terrace of Perla-Mode, last summer the artist was a guest of the Index Freiraumstipendium in Zurich.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Ed Young plays with the role of the artist as the fool, entertainer and admonisher; he provokes with works and interventions using subversive humour and delightful incorrectness to hold up a critical mirror to South African society and the Western-oriented art world, but also to the self-image of the art scene.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Ed Young's text works are disturbing and uncomfortable.
Are they provocative advertising slogans, tweeted hate messages or political propaganda? The texts, always designed in the same typography, do not reveal any emotions, seem almost harmless optically, but the statements are brutal, maliciously vulgar and sinister in their effect.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The title of the exhibition "It's Fun Without You" is initially funny and "fun", which has become a kind of currency in the modern world. The statement plays with the cynical promises of advertising, which keep consumer society alive with ever new seductions, but also with the addiction to endless pleasure and the longing for attention and recognition in the age of social media.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The opening of the intervention in the two shop windows on Sihlhallenstrasse is marked by the publication "The #$@&%*! message salon embassy Zine Nr. 18“.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">"The #$@&%*!” is a pamphlet, a crude text shot from a Twitter machine pistol, a breathless string of disturbing statements and provocations. Who is the narrator in this text? Are they real fragments from the comment sections on news portals or from Donald Trump's Twitter account, from Emmanuel Macron's speeches or from an Antifa website? Or perhaps the spawning of an unleashed algorithm, fed with the daily obscenities of the Internet?</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The artist's attitude to the content of the text is no longer recognizable, moral absolution is sought in vain.
